BEHIND LEGACY

My name is Jake Nelson and I’m the founder of Legacy Sawyer & Craft. I am happily married and the father of two. My passion for woodworking started at a young age; I remember when my parents were building an addition on our house, I took scrap wood and scavenged nails to build treehouses in the back yard. Then my father and grandfather helped me build projects for 4-H. In my teens I started a small woodworking business by making Adirondack chairs and selling them on Craigslist. I also made charcuterie boards, cutting boards, urns, tables, and other small pieces. From there I was introduced to saw milling and I started milling trees from my own back yard and other logs that I came across. This opened my eyes to the a whole new world as I discovered the beauty and unique character inside of each log. I found that I didn’t just want to make wood products, but I wanted to take part in the whole woodworking process: from tree to finished product. Then as I started building finer pieces of furniture with my own sawn logs, I discovered the necessity of kiln drying lumber. After researching all of the kiln options, I decided to build my own solar kiln to suit my needs. My passion has now developed into a business using locally sourced lumber to create fine pieces of furniture and custom work for clients, as well as offering saw milling and kiln drying for other woodworkers.
